Character Name: Holland Vosijk
Character Pronouns: he/him
Character Canon: the Shades of Magic series by V. E. Schwab
Intended Housing: Skolem Townhomes, number 3
Intended Position: Medical Staff at the Wellness Center

Summary of Character:

the Shades of Magic series is set in four connected worlds: Red London, White London, Grey London, and Black London, which all have varying levels of magic. Holland is an Antari magician, a very rare type of magic-user capable of elemental bending and various blood-triggered commands including the ability to travel between worlds, marked by an entirely black left eye. He's from White London, a world that use to be beautiful and peaceful, but its magic became corrupted and started to drain away, making White London faded and turning its people cruel and desperate.

holland had a troubled childhood in the slums, was often made a target because of his magic, but nonetheless grew up strong and confident. In his early twenties, he was captured by a sadistic pair of royals, and forcibly soul-bound because they wanted an Antari pet -- when he wasn't being made to murder their opposition, they delighted in torturing him extensively. Seven years later, they were killed, and Holland was almost killed by one of the protagonists, left for dead. He was then free to make the decision to ally with an entity of pure magic in the hopes of saving his world, only to get possessed and bound by yet another thing when it turns out to be chaotic and evil, though it later frees him. He's King of White London for a while, and helps it to heal. He then spends most of the third book in chains, making repeated attempts to sacrifice himself to save their worlds, and eventually succeeds: sacrificing his magic and therefore his life to seal away the magic entity that had threatened all their worlds.

(for a more detailed backstory, a bio is here! I'm taking him from after the end of the third book)

personality wise, Holland is a deeply broken man who shows little emotion, largely because he doesn't let himself feel much despite the few things he's super passionate about. His demeanor is mostly calm and unruffled, even in the midst of absolute chaos. I think he smiled maybe once in the entire trilogy. He expects everyone to treat him badly, and doesn't protest when they do. That being said, when he does feel strongly about something, he will offer himself up body and soul.

in Newcombe, Holland's going to be struggling with being away from the world he loved and so desperately wanted to save -- the one thing he still cared about -- and will be throwing himself into medical work at the Wellness Center. He can heal people magically, which he will be doing liberally, though it does have some limits in that he can't regenerate lost limbs or revive the dead. It also drains him significantly, but that'll just appeal to his self-sacrificial nature lmao

and after all of that -- hello! I'm cosmo, please feel absolutely free to hit me up for plots :D Holland is a real slowburn character who will be slow to trust and even slower to be friendly, but at the very least he'll be polite!

Man Cosmo, they are gonna be such good friends- I forsee it now.

In fact you have absolutely (no choice) in the matter, they are getting CR. Also Caleb is always drawn to the broken ones™! Must be because oh I don't know.. *stares at the scene of the crime*

Holland is going to think Frumpkin is the cutest thing ever (though he'll be very :| faced about it) and he and Caleb can bond about magic (he will be very interested in the transmutation magic that Caleb is teaching lmao). It might take a while to unlock each other's tragic backstories but that is the beauty of ~evolving dynamics~

Frumpkin is the friend-maker, that's true in a nutshell! <3 and gods, yeah I think that they will likely be happy to nerd about magic and talk shop. Friendship is always a slow burn in most situations, and I think that we need to be real, magic is a gateway drug to a lot of interactions!

Magic IS a gateway drug

Like I could see Holland sitting in on a few of Caleb's classes here and there, because transmutation is very limited in his world (only from element to element, and only in a certain order), so the breadth of Caleb's magic will be so interesting to him

I feel like Penric's situation will be sending up red flags for Holland, despite it being actually functional and Pen having seen and assisted with cases of actual possession. (Mostly 'distract the target to let the exorcist do their thing'.)

But he's also been in the 'self-sacrificing healer' thing, which is why he's not a doctor, but will come by and assist during crises.

Oh yeah Holland is high-key dubious over Penric's situation and he won't even remotely hide that when they meet outside of the network dkjasldj

Eventually he'll realize it's not a bad possession, but there will be much squinting and doubt until that happens. He'll also be happy for the help in the medical center! I get the feeling that crises with many injuries are going to happen semi-regularly here lmao

I mean, fair. Even in Penric's canon, people wonder in general (and about him in particular, because he doesn't even try to pretend he's not got a second being in there with him.). Pen will be a lot more understanding if he ever finds out Holland's backstory, because he's met people whose demons ascended (read: were possessed) and actually had to be exorcised.

And there isn't really a way to spot possession of this sort unless one is spiritually sensitive enough, though if Holland has that sense, he can not only tell that Penric is the one in control, but see when Penric lets Desdemona use his voice. (Also that Des is frighteningly powerful as one of her kind go.)
