"It isn't just a 'you' problem, because I... well, we, are feeling it as well. But I've never heard of magic being cast from a book." Certainly Pen knew that people wrote things down, though it didn't seem to help saints. He'd written his own works on medical sorcery. But the words were no more the ability, than instructions on how to craft a sword were the same as skill at blacksmithing. For that matter, Penric didn't generally group the different powers he knew about as 'magic', though it was a practical word for people who didn't care to make distinctions.

"I can try to see what you are doing, if you don't mind." Des's Sight was irregular, but they could see if something showed up. Or even if the man left some mark that indicated what, exactly, he was doing.

[OOC: I have no idea how that would intersect with D&D wizardry, since it basically works on the soul level, but can spot flows of energy.]
